The fact that there is Someone Who is above all things including human affairs and all that we’re involved in can be very intimidating when you think about it. Most people would rather assume that they’re in charge and in control of their own lives and destinies. The fact of the matter however is that God is sovereign and in control over all things, and He alone is to be worshipped.

Because God has given the human race free will and the ability to make choices, many times some among our number wrongfully think that they’re able to run the universe and manipulate the future and to somehow take God’s place. It is worth noting the discipline that king Nebuchadnezzar went through in Daniel 4 and the lesson he learnt after he exalted himself against God and His purposes. In vs 34-37 we read as follows:

And at the end of days, I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes to Heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honoured Him who lives forever, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His rule is from generation to generation. And all the people of the earth are counted as nothing; and He does according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the people of the earth. And none can strike His hand, or say to Him, What are You doing? At that time my reason returned to me. And the glory of my kingdom, my honour and brightness returned to me. And my advisers and my lords came for me, and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me. Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and exalt and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth and His ways judgment. And those who walk in pride He is able to humble.

Like Nebuchadnezzar of old who learnt the hard way that God is in a class of His own and the only one to be worshipped, we too can choose to submit to Him now. He deserves our worship and all honour because He’s the one Who created us, has the blueprint for our lives and can redeem us from sin and hell. Even if we don’t submit to Him now, sooner or later we will, as we’re told in Phil. 2: 9-11

Therefore God has highly exalted Him, and has given Him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of heavenly ones, and of earthly ones, and of ones under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Prayer

Lord God Almighty, we acknowledge You as our only God – the only one to Whom worship and honour is due. Help us to realize that even though there are people that we respect due to their office or positions, worship is only reserved for You.
